Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about liver conditions and treatments.
Liver transplant evaluation is a comprehensive process that includes medical tests (blood work, imaging), cardiac and pulmonary assessments, psychological evaluation, and social assessment to determine if a patient is a suitable candidate for transplantation.
NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) is a condition where fat accumulates in the liver. NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis) is the more severe form where the fat causes liver inflammation and damage. NASH can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure if not treated.
ERCP is performed under sedation. A flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the stomach and small intestine. A dye is injected into the bile ducts, and X-rays are taken. If stones or blockages are found, they can be removed or stents can be placed during the same procedure.
Symptoms of liver cirrhosis may include:
- Fatigue and weakness
- Loss of appetite and weight loss
- Yellowing of skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Swelling in legs and abdomen (edema & ascites)
- Easy bruising and bleeding
- Confusion or difficulty thinking
Yes, early-stage fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is often reversible through lifestyle modifications including weight loss (5-10% of body weight), regular exercise, balanced diet, avoiding alcohol, and controlling conditions like diabetes and high cholesterol.
EUS (Endoscopic Ultrasound) combines endoscopy with ultrasound to create detailed images of the digestive tract and surrounding organs. It's used to evaluate pancreatic cysts, bile duct abnormalities, liver lesions, and to perform fine needle biopsies for diagnosis.
